Makaravilakku — Sabarimala
13–14 January
The culminating festival of the Sabarimala pilgrimage season — one of the world's largest annual pilgrimages, drawing 30–50 million devotees. The divine star (Makara Jyoti) appears in the night sky above the hills. An extraordinary spectacle of mass devotion.

Amritapuri Winter Season
All of January–February
Amma's extended darshan programs and meditation intensives run through the entire winter season. January–February are the prime months for deep retreat, extended seva (service), and participating in the ashram's rich daily spiritual life.

Kollam Pooram
February–March (lunar calendar)
The major temple festival of Kollam — a vibrant procession of caparisoned elephants, traditional panchavadyam percussion, and spectacular fireworks through the historic streets of Kollam town. Smaller and more intimate than Thrissur Pooram, but deeply atmospheric.

Attukal Pongala
February–March (lunar calendar)
The world's largest congregation of women — over 3 million women cook ritual pongala (sweet rice pudding) on open fires in the streets surrounding the Attukal Bhagavathy Temple, earning it a Guinness World Record. An extraordinary and deeply moving spectacle.

Vishu — Kerala Astrological New Year
14 April
Vishu is Kerala's astrological New Year — the sun enters Mesha (Aries). The day begins before dawn with the Vishukkani: a sacred arrangement of auspicious items viewed first upon waking. Followed by gift-giving (Vishu Kaineetam) and a grand feast. Celebrated at the retreat itself — guests join the family's own ceremony.

Thrissur Pooram
April–May (lunar calendar — Medam month)
Kerala's greatest temple festival — arguably the grandest in all of India. Two rival temples compete in a spectacular display of 30+ caparisoned elephants holding golden umbrellas, thundering panchavadyam percussion orchestras, and dawn fireworks that light up the sky for miles. Breathtaking.

July
Karkidakam Ayurveda Month
All of July (Malayalam month Karkidakam)
Karkidakam is traditionally the most sacred month for Ayurvedic treatment in Kerala. Monsoon humidity opens the body's pores and makes it maximally receptive to oil therapies. Veda Heritage offers a 7-day Karkidakam Ayurveda package: daily abhyanga, herbal diet, garden immersion, and Karkidaka Ramayanam reading.

Onam — Kerala Harvest Festival
August–September (Chingam month, 10 days)
Kerala's greatest cultural festival — a 10-day celebration of King Mahabali's return. The highlights: elaborate Pookalam (floral carpet art) created daily at Veda Heritage, the grand 26-dish Onam Sadya feast on banana leaf, Vallam Kali (snake boat races) on the backwaters, and Kathakali performances.

Amma's Birthday Celebration
Late September (exact date announced by ashram)
The most important event of the Amritapuri calendar. Amma's birthday draws 20,000–50,000 devotees from around the world over 3 days. The ashram transforms with lights, flowers, and devotional music. Amma gives extended darshan — sometimes for 12+ hours. The atmosphere is extraordinary: joyful, devotional, electric.

Navaratri & Vijayadasami
October (9 days, lunar calendar)
Nine Nights celebrating the Divine Mother in her many forms. In Kerala, Vijayadasami is the most auspicious day for children to begin learning — the Vidyarambham ceremony, where children write their first letter in rice with their finger. Deeply moving. Amritapuri celebrates with special Devi programs.

Ashtamudi Boat Race
November (date varies annually)
A spectacular snake boat race on Kollam's beautiful Ashtamudi Lake — one of Kerala's largest backwater systems. The racing chundan vallams (100-foot canoes powered by 100+ rowers) are propelled by ancient rhythmic chants. Free entry from the lakeside banks.
